CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

CONNOR

BECCA WAS right; I hate supervising. I stand back and watch as Victor helps the guys unload supplies off the truck. After his third trip, he stops and stands beside me.

“You’re hating this, aren’t you?”

I huff and shake my head. “You have no idea.”

His mouth tips up into a smile. “I do. I was in a car accident that broke several ribs. I was out of commission for six months. It was pure torture.”

I turn to him, seeing shadows in his eyes. “That’s awful.”

He sighs and looks out toward the guys moving the rest of the supplies. “In more ways than one,” he says, being his cryptic self. I’m learning to let it go, though.

“Do you still think Donovan is going to show up again?” I ask him. He looks at me again, and I know he does before he can say anything.

“One of the biggest mistakes I ever made was not seeing how destructive Donovan is,” Victor admits. “If I could go back and change anything, it would be that my eyes would have been opened much sooner. Things would be so different.”

His voice is laced with regret. I want to ask questions, but I ignore that impulse.

“Well, you know now. We can make a change before anything happens.”

He inhales deeply, nodding once. “I hope so.” We’re quiet for several minutes, but then he turns to me with a question. “Didn’t your brother used to be a detective?” he asks.

“Yes. Why?” I reply, watching him closely.

“I heard he’s a professor now, though, right? But does he still do that kind of thing?” Victor doesn’t usually talk this much, so whatever this is must be important to him.

“He is a professor, but this is his last semester. He’s starting his own company to be a private detective.”

He leans back on the balls of his feet as he mulls over the information. “I might have a case for him.”

I wait for him to continue, but he says nothing else. “Well, we’re going over to Melissa’s house this weekend. You should come and talk to him there.”

His mouth tips up into a smile. “Yes. Olivia told me about it and asked me to come,” he replies.

“Who’s Olivia?”

He raises an eyebrow. “You all call her Liv.”

“Oh, that’s right. You’ve known her a long time, huh?”

His mouth tips up into a smile. “Her whole life.”

I want to ask more questions, but I’m learning with Victor. He’ll reveal things in his own time. One of his workers calls out to him, and he walks away. He’s known Liv her whole life. I’m interested in finding out more about their relationship. Grabbing my new phone out of my pocket, I think about calling Becca and asking her but decide against it. I’ll talk to her later. Instead, I text her.

Me: Send me a picture of you.

I hold my phone in my hand and wait patiently. A few seconds later, my phone vibrates. I swipe it open and laugh when a picture pops up of her foot.
