MISS VAN’S BALACLAVA
ADVENTUROUS KNITTER
This pattern is all about construction. If you’re looking for a technical challenge, Miss Van’s Balaclava is for you! It features knitting in the round, the herringbone stitch and decreases. Challenge yourself with this modern ski mask!
Have you ever seen a mural by Miss Van? Put down my book right now and Google Miss Van, I’ll wait. Whoooaaa, right?! Her murals hit you with bold colors and a velvety texture. Her masked murals inspired this fun design.
In this pattern, you’ll begin by knitting in the round. I highlight a proper twisted rib, knitting through the back loop of both the knits and purls, giving the section around your neck a defined texture. The rib also allows for stretch.
The herringbone portion is knit flat. In order to make a hole for your face, you’ll learn how to bind off mid-round, knit flat for a number of rows and then cast on mid-round. This is followed by decrease shaping for the top of your head. I like to think of this pattern as a knitting puzzle, keeping your attention with every stitch.
