Designing a Christmas Sampler
The charts in this book have been presented in themes that are ideal for creating a beautiful keepsake Christmas sampler, which can be brought out each year to mark the beginning of the festivities.
Designing Your Own Sample
The nativity sampler design and the variations on this simple plan (see below) together with the suggestions here will give you ideas on how to vary the plan to create your own unique sampler using the motifs in the book.
Choose a theme for your sampler to make it easier to select motifs.
Vary the size of the panels to suit the motifs chosen but keep a balanced look – see Using a Sampler Plan, below.
Repeat a small motif to make a row, changing the colours of each motif.
Take part of a larger motif to make a smaller design. For example, the shops in the snow-covered village on page 52 could be worked separately and used as spot motifs on a sampler.
Use the different alphabets (pages 96 –103) to customize your sampler, adding names, dates and so on. If you are making it as a gift, add a special message for the recipient.
Work a more elaborate border around the whole design to tie all the elements together. For example, use the beaded border from the Christmas carols on pages 26/27.
To stitch a mirror image of a motif, use a mirror to reflect the image and draw this on graph paper or scan the image into a computer, flip it and print out the new image.
