BULBULS AND FINCHBILLS

These jaunty birds with liquid, musical calls number some 20 species in China. Commoner species include the red-whiskered and black-crested (Pycnonotus jocosus and P. melanicterus) in the south and southwest, and the mainly southeastern light-vented bulbul (P. sinensis). The sooty-headed bulbul (P. aurigaster) is also fairly common in the south, while the black bulbul (Hypsipetes leucocephalus) is common in southern evergreen hill forests. The collared finchbill (Spizixos semitorques) is green with a heavy bill, and is found in southeast China. The crested finchbill (Spizixos canifrons) of southwest China is an attractive species which often gathers in large flocks.
