In the middle of June, 1964 the newly ordained Reverend Charles Johnson boarded the train in Jackson for his first General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene. It would take a few days to make the trip from Mississippi to Portland, Oregon, where the quadrennial assembly was being held. The national convention was held only every four years, and the young preacher counted it an honor to represent the Sunday School of the Gulf Central District and his beloved superintendent, Warren Rogers. Johnson would connect with Rogers as soon as he arrived. Until then Charles had plenty of time to reflect on the great journey that had brought him thus far.

Though Portland was just about as far as one could get from Orlando, Florida, Charles knew that he could never go so far from his hometown as he did that first day driving into Mississippi. His heart had sunk to the lowest depths. He had gone in obedience, and obedience alone. Three years later and the young preacher marveled at the watch and care of the God who had called him there. He had survived a threat on his life the first day in town, he had endured the discomfort of deplorable living conditions, and now his little church had outgrown their meager block building. The congregation had also been afforded the luxury of purchasing a nicer parsonage for the pastoral family on the same block as the church.

There was so very much to be done, but a spirit of optimism infused the black community of Meridian. Through the boycotts and picket lines and with the hope of prospective black voters they were finding their voice. COFO had primed the area for a new season in African American history.
