Chapter 10
FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY
WHEN GOD CALLS, HE CALLS IN LOVE. HE LOVES everyone no matter who they are, where they have been, or what they have done. He loves each and every person and He died to rescue us all from sin. As His children, we are also supposed to love everyone just as He does, but that is much easier said than done. How are we supposed to love someone with whom we have nothing in common? How can we love those who live lifestyles that are in direct contrast to the way we live and believe?
In this chapter, I would like to talk about what we should do and how we can love when we are presented with the homosexuality of a family member, friend, or co-worker. When an individual announces their homosexuality, it can be a very tense time for both them and their loved ones. Relationships can be strained or broken and lifelong hurts can develop. If most of the relationships in their lives are thought lost, many homosexuals will turn to and embrace the homosexual community, which they believe is the only place left they can turn to for love and acceptance. My dearest friends, this should not be, either in perception or reality.
People often ask me what they should do when a loved one reveals their homosexuality. While there are certainly some things I will suggest, what most people usually mean when they ask me that is, How can I turn my loved one back into a heterosexual? My answer? You can’t.
If someone you love or know has told you about their homosexuality, it has probably taken them a long time to gather up enough courage to share that information with you. Chances are they are more than a little nervous, fearful of outright rejection, instant condemnation, and intense loathing on the part of those they are telling. Sadly, sometimes their worst fears are confirmed by the reactions of those they love.
The initial announcement of homosexuality can be quite a shock to friends and family, especially if it is unexpected. Questions and comments can fly in those conversations and not all of them will be kind:• Where is this coming from?
