IRON MONKEYS, The Crossroads, 2010. Rolled steel, stainless steel, iron, wood.

This breathtaking fire garden responded to the “Metropolis” theme as an intersection where people could gather, especially at night, to rest, commune, and discover. The circular space was placed at the entry to the playa from Center Camp, forming its outdoor correlative. It included 16 separate elements made from cold-rolled steel: six fire columns, which illuminated and heated the perimeter; three arches, which formed the place of welcome and entry; three zen gardens for participants to trace patterns of fire in sand; three benches for pausing and sharing; and a 10-foot-tall stainless-steel fountain that flowed with both fire and water. The project consumed 900 pounds of propane and was monitored continuously by the 12-member crew.

“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.”

GEORGE ELIOT
