Initially our clam harvest looked a lot more impressive than it actually was.

We gathered up our daughters and our clams, discovered that the frog pond, where we had hoped to gather some cattails (Typha), was home to leeches, and checked on the milkweed and blackberries as we made our way back to our car.

At home, we cleaned and boiled the clams, cut them up and added them to a chowder. The four clams gave us about a pint of soup, and while the exercise may not have provided more than an appetizer for our family, it certainly provided an introductory education to clamming. Next time, we knew a lot more, and sometimes the lesson is more important than the outcome.

What we lack in education and experience, we more than make up for in gumption, and a willingness to put ourselves out there. We know a lot more today than we did a year ago, and each new lesson has empowered us with a deeper understanding of how capable we are, if we allow ourselves to simply learn, without fear.

Wild turkey, from now on, will be part of our harvest meal, and if we can serve a clam chowder as an appetizer, all the better.
