Cursed secrets

“I suppose I should start since I was the first one to experience anything odd. I had the same problems as you. First, the lapses in time, the déjà vu, and then I began watching myself do things that I wasn’t trying to do. Neither of these two knew what I was talking about when I asked,” Nash says as he nods to the other men.

“And we thought he was off his rocker, but it’s not something you can simply go to the doctor for. Not in our business,” Roper adds as he leans forward.

“Exactly. Even though I lead this group while we’re awake, for lack of a better word, Derek is the Commander when we are on missions. If the King discovered that one of his son’s closest subordinates was having a mental break, well, I’d be eliminated most likely. Too big of a risk. And yes, Derek mentioned he told you. It’s not something that’s supposed to be revealed. Ever. So, keep that to yourself. We’re trusting you. Please don’t make us regret it. I’d hate to kill you,” his tone turns grave as he issues his death threat.

“Well, isn’t this fun? Who am I going to tell? Just go on. What do you think is happening?” I ask, ready to get to the meat of things. I didn’t need to listen to stuff I already knew.

Nash waves his hand and continues. “Eventually, these two joined me and started having the same symptoms. We’ve borrowed books from our library. Gone over everything we could find to figure it out. Our best guess is that it’s a curse of some kind. But we don’t know who, why, or how to break it. When I spotted you in the restaurant, staring straight at me, I saw that you were in there. Most people we run across while on missions have a blank look. They’re almost cardboard-like. You? I could see you beating against the cage.”

“Afterwards, we discovered you were a witch. That day in town when he waved at you? We were meeting with contacts in the witch community, trying to get a line on who had the ability to do this. Your name came up,” Roper explains.

Right. That harpy bitch. It would be really nice if she picked Finn up with her claws and flew off into a volcano somewhere. Penny hisses as my fingers tighten on her back. I give her a scratch above the tail in apology, and she closes her eyes again.

“We’ve read that curses can be broken. I don’t think you’ve cast any curses on us, but if you could do whatever’s needed to get rid of one, we’d be grateful,” Derek finishes for them.

They all stare at me expectantly, like I could snap my fingers and things would be back to normal. What a bunch of dumbasses.

“So, let me get this straight. You believe you’re cursed, so you sought a witch, one that just so happens to be able to not only cast the spell but also break that spell.
