Robot cars also have cameras that spot highway signs and can tell if a traffic light is green or red. The really smart part is not that the robocars see a sign but that they also read it and make the right decision. Other important sensors include GPS, which shows almost exactly where the car is, and acceleration sensors (accelerometers) that check the movement of a car to detect slippery or bumpy highway surfaces.

BOTS IN TRANSIT

Robot buses have already appeared on the streets in some European cities, such as Helsinki in Finland and Tallinn in Estonia. They work in the same way as self-driving cars but are also controlled from a special center where humans can watch out for any problems. Engineers are also working on railroads controlled by robots and even planes and helicopters that can fly with no pilots. One day, robots will be taking you wherever you want to go!

Whoops!

One problem with robocars in the real world is that unexpected things happen. If the car has to make a quick decision, should it save its passengers or any people on the street? And who takes the blame if there’s no driver? These are questions that really haven’t been solved yet.
