Here Dylan’s thought is at its most absolutistic point: Christianity is the truth, and therefore any view at odds with it must be false. To maintain such a strong absolutist stance requires more than logic; there must be some basis for the claim to truth. Unfortunately, as we explain how we arrive at the truth, we must also explain how and why others fail to do so. For if the truth is actually “in our hearts” there must be a reason why “we still don’t believe.” And it is this explanation of error that causes problems. Herein lie the seeds of intolerance, where a difference of viewpoint is seen as an error and an error is seen as an evil, in this case the work of a subtle “enemy.” Relativism seeks to avoid these consequences by denying that truth is absolute. Are there alternative solutions that preserve the logical point of absolutism, without denigrating the views of our doubters?
