A dull and shortened roar: Mutes

You can play a note softly to de-emphasize it or to make an accented note stand out even more. But you can also mute the note with the right hand, which not only makes it softer but also actually dulls the tone and shortens the sustain. This technique is also applied for chords and riffs in Chapters 5 and 7, but in this chapter, you apply it to single-string lead playing. Figure 10-3 shows a lead passage that uses muted notes (indicated by the letters P.M.) along with accented notes to sustain the dramatic interest.
