HUGE WHALE, TINY PREY

Even though blue whales are huge, their food is very tiny. They feed mostly on krill. Krill are crustaceans, like small shrimp. They tend to live in large bunches, and blue whales like to swallow as many krill as possible in one big bite.

Blue whales can eat 40 million krill in just one day. They open their mouths, catching water and krill. Then, they push their tongue up against their baleen and let out the water. Their baleen traps the unlucky prey.

Swarms of krill are like a blue whale buffet!
