‘My pendant,’ I shouted. ‘Where’s my pendant?’

I was about to be transferred to a stretcher when I noticed I’d lost my pendant. An image of St Christopher pressed into silver, Tyson and Mike, my friends from school, had given it to me before I left. The pendant had history. Tyson and Mike had been co-owners of it for years. They’d passed it between themselves, giving it to whoever was about to go on a trip. They decided to give it to me before I left for Afghanistan. Now I couldn’t find it.

‘You have to find it,’ I said. ‘It has got to be here somewhere.’

It should have been in one of the two side-pockets of my pants. It wasn’t. In fact, I couldn’t even find the pockets. They’d been blown off in the blast.

‘You need to find it,’ I said. ‘It’s on the end of a necklace.’

The boys looked everywhere, metal detectors and all, but couldn’t find it.

‘There’s shit everywhere,’ one of them said. ‘The ground’s covered with shrapnel.’

I burst into tears. I was devastated that the pendant was gone.
