THE CHINAMAN
We spent another few days on that sand bar, and as the 7th Marines made their way west we would have to follow, right to Laos if need be. The last night we were on the sand bar an odd thing happened. As a rule both the NVA and Marines in no way wanted to leave their wounded and dead out on the battle field for the other to see. When our wire was attacked nightly, we would return fire and kill and wound the enemy, but come daylight all that could be found was blood stains and a few body parts. That last night was different. An enemy sapper had breached the wire and was killed before he could reach the amtrak and set off his satchel charge. Jesse and I were working the FDC shift inside the bunker when the attack took place. When our shift was over the lieutenant told us about the sapper and took us to him.
Yes, he was dead. He had a few bullet holes in his side and back, and he was naked from the waist up. The lieutenant told us he would have killed us that night if he had made it to the amtrak. The lieutenant then said, “What’s wrong with this picture?” Jesse and I couldn’t venture a guess. “Look at his face, arms and upper body.” We looked again and realized that his face didn’t look Vietnamese. He was sort of fat, or at least well fed, and he had a bulky upper body.
“He’s Chinese, I’d bet my life on it. A red Chinese,” the lieutenant said.
The Lieutenant was right. He didn’t look like any Vietnamese man or boy I had ever seen. We pulled the blanket back over him and returned to our hole. Jesse and I didn’t talk much; he was still distant even though we shared a hole. We didn’t talk about this either. We just went to sleep.
