Chelsea |15

Chelsea dragged herself into the town hall the following morning. She didn’t bother putting any makeup on and piled her hair up on her head in a mess. What was the point? There was no one to impress. Enduring Louisa’s scrutiny wasn’t enough to keep her from walking in wearing jeans and an off the shoulder sweater.

Witches be damned indeed.

Sleep had never come, instead, she tossed and turned as the weight in her stomach got heavier. Every time she remembered Connor’s kiss, the weight got heavier. He was nice and all, but she wasn’t interested.

She kept her eyes forward, trained on her office door, in hopes she made it across the room before Louisa cornered her. Relief washed over her when her hand touched the doorknob.

“Chelsea…” Connor called.

She let her shoulders fall and hung her head with a sigh. Almost home free.

“Connor.” She plastered on her practiced fake smile before twisting around. “Good morning.”

What was he even doing here this early?

“How are you?”

“Tired,” she admitted.

Louisa caught her eye from across the room. A light reaching into them with a satisfied smile. She didn’t try to cross the room to her, and that was a first.

“What are you doing here so early?” Chelsea asked.

I need coffee if I’m going to deal with both of them today.

“My grandmother wants me to spend some time learning the ins and outs of how the witches run the city.”

Chelsea bit back a giggle. “Run the city?”

“Well,” he smirked. “I think she just wants me to see how the community functions. So, I’ll be spending a lot of time here.”

Oh fan-fucking-tastic.

“Great.” She forced a smile. “There’s plenty to learn.”

“I was wondering, if you don’t have plans, if you’d like to have dinner with me tonight?” he asked.

Stomach in knots, she risked a look in Louisa’s direction. She had moved a little closer and nodded discreetly. It oddly seemed to keep Louisa content if she believed she was hitting it off with her grandson. If it kept her off her back maybe, if Chelsea avoided another unwanted kiss, she could entertain this enough to give her some peace. Breathing room.

“Um, sure. Shirley’s?”

“Perfect. We can head over together at the end of the day?”

She swallowed hard. “Great.”
