Consider the following questions individually or discuss them with colleagues or in literacy leadership team settings.

Teachers

• Think about how you currently teach vocabulary to your elementary students. How do you incorporate rich opportunities with words both linguistically and nonlinguistically?

• Select one linguistic and one nonlinguistic strategy from this chapter. Get to know each well, perhaps practicing with a grade-level team member. Think about how to use the strategy to support a unit of study, and try it out. Provide feedback to a team member. Would you change anything the next time you try it? What worked? Perhaps more important, what didn’t?

• Check out the ideas for word walls in this chapter and in the Teacher Toolkit on Kimberly’s website (Tyson, 2013g). Visit go.SolutionTree.com/literacy for a live link to this resource. Think about developing a new word wall in your classroom. How will you use it? Reflect on how you will keep it active, growing, and integrated into instructional activities.

Literacy Leadership Teams

• What guidelines, if any, have you given to colleagues for word walls? What are you now considering adding or changing?

• How could your school incorporate word walls into unexpected places such as the gymnasium, cafeteria, and hallways? What kind of words would you feature?

• How might you model the use of motor imaging, concept circles, or word wheels in a staff meeting or professional learning session?

• How do the strategies included in this chapter help build your teachers’ toolbox of effective vocabulary strategies? What can you, as a literacy leadership team member, do to support implementation?

• Do teachers currently incorporate digital tools and apps into word learning and practice? Take time to preview several that would support vocabulary goals in your school (for example, direct instruction, practice, review, and building word consciousness). Model a few digital tools in a staff meeting. Provide time for teachers to check them out and determine which best support their vocabulary goals.

• Encourage teachers to create an online shared space in Evernote or OneNote, Google Docs, or a Pinterest board where teachers can share resources, lesson plans, images, and word wall ideas with one another.
