Male:

Compact reddish brown body with a black crown and nape. Large bright white cheek patch. Distinctive light blue bill. Long tail, often raised above the water. Winter has a dull brown-to-gray body and dark bill.

Female:

similar to winter male, lacks the large white cheek patch and blue bill

Juvenile:

similar to female

Nest:

ground; female builds; 1 brood per year

Eggs:

6-8; pale white without markings

Incubation:

23-26 days; female incubates

Fledging:

42-48 days; female and male feed young
