I have been conscious for nearly fifty years of the extraordinary quality of the Big Sur Coast but only within the past decade have I become aware of the very real dangers facing its future. I have searched my soul for a logical explanation of why I have so dedicated myself to the protective aspect of the land-ethic. I find that I can explain it only as a form of religion, or religious experience. . . . I am deeply concerned with the possible many small groups (regional and county) who might enter into the management picture and be incapable of an adequate inclusive management and funding program. Hence, my strong personal conviction that only National Park Service support and management could achieve the desired objectives.
