The motivations for this spiritualized interpretation were his pastoral con - cerns and his interest in expounding the text in its most beneficial fashion. We can see the influence of Theodoret's theological presuppositions and his context, as well as his self-understanding, as critical elements in shaping his interpretation of Scripture.

Theodoret's work did not evidence originality, yet there were marks of a creative synthesis with other traditions. In his hermeneutical approach he adopted a middle course, avoiding the radical historicism of Theodore of Mopsuestia and his consistent literalism. Where possible, Theodoret offered broad typological interpretations, even allowing for figurative explanations on occasion. He was an heir to the theological and hermeneutical traditions of Antioch, yet his self-understanding as pastor of the flock and his own cultural and theological horizons were seen to be influential factors in his exegetical practices. Beginning with different starting points than contemporaries such as Jerome, Augustine, or Cyril of Alexandria, he nevertheless demonstrated an eclectic hermeneutic representative of the canonical and Catholic concerns of the fifth-century church.
