Hope

From delicious burgers at shady joints, to slow-dancing in a closed butterfly conservatory, to near misses with a turtle stomping flamingo, the evening had been the most memorable night in my entire life. Magic shimmered around Eli and me, bubbling like the champagne in our glasses. Maybe that was the way it always was with us. Maybe that was what everyone kept swearing they saw. Maybe we’d been ignoring it from day one.

“You’re setting the bar awfully high, don’t you think?” I asked as we pulled into the parking lot in front of our apartment. “I’m not sure future nights out can live up to this.”

He shook his head, opening the driver’s side door and letting in the humid night air. Crickets chirped in the dark and a breeze lifted my hair in a dance around my shoulders as I stood. A streetlamp cast a hazy yellow circle on the walk and Eli stepped into it, always one for the spotlight. He reached for me, pulling me in like I was Ginger Rogers and he was Fred Astaire. We spun in place, slowly, carefully, my skirt brushing against my thigh as his hand embraced mine.

“This is better than I could have hoped,” he murmured, his eyes hooded, a smile tugging at his mouth. “And to think, all this time you were right there.”

He shifted, dipping me low, taking my weight in his arms, totally and completely in control. I stared up at him, at his mercy and loving it. Drunk on the evening, drunk on him, drunk on us…all I could do was nod.

We danced under the night sky, unaware of time passing, of people walking by. We were lost in each other. In the possibilities of the evening, the delicate uncertainty of what we were doing. Each step brought us closer to our front door, to the end of our first date as a couple, and heat rose inside of me.

This was Eli. I knew his body, his mind, his habits. I knew how much he meant to me, a love born of friendship, slowly transforming over the last year.

I knew the sultry tales he told to music and I knew, with one glance, he could destroy me…he made that promise every night he danced at Eggplant. Suddenly, and with very little warning, I was carnally aware of how much I wanted him to make good on that promise.

Before he could open our apartment door, I pulled him to me, pressing my lips to his, our bodies connecting with a crash of insistence. I ran my fingers into his hair, surprising myself with my intensity. Eli made a sound, a spark to the gasoline running through my veins. We were electric, a tangle of touch and instinct, our bodies moving outside of thought, fueled by desire.

Somehow, we stumbled into our home, barely managing to close the door before Eli had me pressed against it, caging me with his arms as his mouth made tender promises.

Hands clasping. Fingers gripping. The long draw of nails against skin.
