BESIDES THE crown of life, the apostle Paul suggests a second crown we’ll receive in heaven:

I have done my best in the race, I have run the full distance, and I have kept the faith. And now there is waiting for me the victory prize of being put right with God, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that Day—and not only to me, but to all those who wait with love for him to appear. (2 Tim. 4:7–8 TEV)

The word righteousness defines itself. It means, simply, to be in a right relationship with God. The apostle Paul looks toward the day when he is crowned in righteousness. Now, the careful Bible student might raise a question here. Aren’t we already righteous? Didn’t I just read previously that we are clothed in righteousness when we become Christians? Yes, you did.

Then why do we also receive crowns of righteousness? What happens in heaven that hasn’t happened on earth? Those are good questions and can be answered by using a favorite analogy of the apostle Paul: the analogy of adoption.
