Though she had lived in Woodstock in the late sixties, McFree did not know Sara’s ex-husband, though they had met at the wedding of Rosanna and Jonathan Taplin in 1975. However, as she tells it, McFree suddenly found herself awakening from an intense dream involving Dylan a couple of days after Sara had set out for Hawaii.

Faridi McFree: I fell out of bed. I mean it was so intense, this loneliness, and I didn’t understand it. Then that morning the next door neighbor, [who] was a filmmaker, a very big one, called me and said, ‘Did you hear, Faridi? Bob got a divorce last night from Sara in Santa Monica.’ And I said, ‘No, Sara’s getting the divorce.’ And he said, ‘Uh-uh, he beat her to it.’ And then I had this pain again in my heart all day. I [thought], I can’t stand it, [and] I picked up the phone and I said, ‘Bob, this is Faridi. I work with Sara and the children. I’m the children’s art teacher. Are you okay?’ And he said, ‘No, I’m not okay.’ So I said, ‘I had this strong feeling that I should call you.’ … And then he [asked me], ‘What are you doing right now?’ I said, ‘Nothing.’ He said, ‘Why don’t you come over? I really, really need to talk to someone.’ I said, ‘It’s late. I don’t really want to.’ ’Cause he was thirteen miles from the house that she had rented at the colony … [and] I was a little afraid of him, so I said, ‘I don’t think so.’ He said, ‘I really do.’ So I said, ‘Oh, okay.’ … I go there, and I was scared, because there are all these bodyguards, and it just seemed very scary, all these guys. [But] they let me in … And then Bob came toward the light and, as I was driving slowly, he looked like he was crazed. And I got so scared. I said, ‘Oh, my God. What am I doing here?’ But he came to the car, and he drove with me to the house, and we just never stopped talking … We just talked into the night. I don’t think we stopped talking until four or five o’clock in the morning. He just poured and poured and poured out his heart. All these grievances that he was feeling, grief and everything else … We talked right around the clock. And that’s how [our affair] started.
