Lastly, if you could give would be entrants one last piece of advice, what would it be?

BETH: Edit your film. We really see so many features that are just 15 minutes too long, or shorts that need a few minutes trimmed.

DUSTIN: Don’t be afraid to kill your babies — taking out scenes that you love, but don’t add to the overall story.

I would also add that one of the best things to do is get involved with a festival and become a pre-screener or programmer. If you really understood the process — and have the opportunity to see the films that don’t make the cut — you have a major advantage over other filmmakers.
