Chapter Fifteen

Penance

The next morning I’m awakened by the sickly smell of dog vomit. I can’t wait to hunt around my apartment looking for it. It doesn’t take long. When I step out of bed it finds me.

I hop to the bathroom and rinse off my foot before stripping for a long, hot shower. My stomach is growling from not eating last night, and I decide to forgo doing my makeup and hair in favor of a greasy breakfast.

Preston has left me many, many presents of vomit and diarrhea all over the apartment, but I can’t be too mad as it is mostly my fault. Okay, all my fault.

“I’m sorry I didn’t take you out last night and left this horrible tempting mess for you to eat. Is your tummy all better?” I ask him, cleaning up some of the mess, leaving the rest for the carpet cleaning service I am going to call when I get to work.

I call the leasing office to ask if they can let the cleaning service into my place, lock Preston in the bathroom in preparation for the carpet cleaners, and make one more important call.

“Oswald’s House of Omelets, can I help you?” the way-too-chipper hostess asks.

“I need a chorizo, bacon, tomato, avocado, cheddar omelet with hash browns and a small OJ, to go.”

“Sure thing, it’ll be ready in fifteen minutes.”
