Basic Supplies

Assorted beads: Gather 20 to 30 beads for a bracelet and 60 or more beads for a necklace, depending on their shape (with an average size of 6mm).

Bead board: Use one that will comfortably meet the needs of the size of your design, as well as your available work space.

Containers: Use a divided storage container or muffin tin or small jars for sorting beads.

Flexible Wire: A good basic wire is .019-gauge silver-gray flexible wire. A good rule of thumb for length is 12″ for a standard single-strand bracelet and 1 yard for the longest of necklaces, lariats or eyeglass holders. For a 16″–18″ necklace and a bracelet set, plan on using 1 yard. It is better to err on the side of more wire than less. Crimping an end that is short on wire can get pretty labor-intensive. So, in this instance, more is better.

Split ring or jump ring (optional): Use one in base metal: silver or gold. Split rings are more durable than jump rings.

Crimp beads: Use two 2mm × 3mm sterling silver, gold or vermeil crimp beads made of precious metals, not base metal.

Seamless, round beads (optional): Use two sterling silver, gold or vermeil 2mm to 3mm seamless, round beads to finish your bracelets and necklaces. Place them at each end of your project, just before the crimp bead, to help the crimp bead withstand some of the pressure placed on it during wear.

Clasp: Use a toggle set or lobster-claw clasp with a tab end in gold, silver, base metal, pewter or vermeil. If the tab end is not available, use a jump ring or a split ring instead.
