Setting boundaries of work is important to separate the person from the position as well. Educators can be sidetracked by a new initiative, a new request or, as Todd Whitaker writes, a “new monkey.” By establishing and sticking to goals and a plan, you have an easy out when anything new comes your way. Dr. Henry Cloud states in his book Boundaries for Leaders, “Boundaries are what you create and what you allow.” Think about it. How often have you wanted to set the tone for a positive school culture or classroom, but when people criticize or complain, you allow it? Or what if your school mantra is “All Means All,” but you hear a teacher say things about specific children certainly not aligned to the school vision? Just like in your classroom and family, don’t create a rule or expectation if you yourself don’t expect to follow it.

[Jessica] After a number of years as a teacher, I had a challenging class I couldn’t quite figure out, even though it was mid-year. Each day I came to school with a clean slate, but by lunchtime I felt defeated. I reflected on student behaviors, trying to identify what needed to change. Only after I figured out I needed to change—not my students—did things improve. I realized eating lunch with a group of adults who always complained about the school, their students, or their personal lives wasn’t giving me the time I needed to regroup, refocus, and reflect on how to make positive changes for the rest of the day. After this, I started eating lunch in a different space, reading articles about ways to help students self-regulate better, and sometimes ate or went to recess with the students. This change in my behavior had a direct impact on how my classroom climate changed.
