The Later ‘Akka Period (1877–1892)

B

aha’u’llah spent two years (1877–79) living in the small mansion of Mazra‘ih with only a few members of his family, his secretary Mirza Aqa Jan and a doorman, accompanying him. He then moved to a larger mansion at Bahji, situated three kilometres north of ‘Akka. This mansion had been constructed by ‘Udi Khammar, the Christian merchant who had owned the house in ‘Akka to which Baha’u’llah had moved in 1871. ‘Udi Khammar died in an epidemic that raged through the area in 1879 and so the mansion became available for ‘Abdu’l-Baha to rent for Baha’u’llah in September 1879. Most of his family and several of his companions moved there with him.
