Northern Alligator Lizard, Elgaria coerulea

Family Anguidae (Glass and Alligator Lizards)

Size: Up to 12" long

Range: Pacific Northwest to coastal California and the Sierra Nevada

Habitat: Cool and moist woodlands or fields

The Northern Alligator Lizard has a stout body, a triangular head with a long snout, short limbs, and distinct grooves along each side of its body, allowing it to expand for breathing and feeding. The skin is greenish brown to bluish, with variable dark spots that may coalesce into bands or stripes. The belly is paler, with thin dark stripes that run between the scales. Juveniles are very smooth (like a skink), with a wide light stripe down the back and no dark bands. Northern Alligator Lizards are secretive, moving through and under logs, rocks, and dense brush in search of insects, eggs, or small vertebrates. If captured, the lizard may detach its tail or emit feces.
