Asanas bring the spine and head into alignment to promote proper blood flow throughout your body, and then bring your mind into a state of relaxation. Also, asanas help energize your glands, lungs, and heart. Asanas are also commonly prescribed for back, neck, and joint-pain problems.

Pranayama focuses on regulating your breath, thereby promoting physical relaxation, calming your restless mind, and creating mental focus and increased energy.

Samadhi is an advanced level of meditation that comes from practicing the asanas and pranayama. We discuss the nature of samadhi later in the chapter.

Practicing yoga postures: Asana

Asana literally means “ease” in Sanskrit. Even though many of the yoga postures, or asanas, involve little movement, the mind is actively involved in the performance of every asana. Thus, by practicing yoga postures, you discover how to regulate automatic nervous system functions (such as your heartbeat and breath) while allowing physical tensions to relax. This process, in turn, can help teach you to prevent or relieve back pain.
