“Do your brother and your cousin not have girlfriends?” Emma asked, as she sat with Andrew a few days later. They were out in the gardens, basking in the glorious sunshine, keeping an eye on the kids, who were playing on the lawn. She drank deep from the icy lemonade that had been brought out, as though she hadn’t seen lemonade in years. Andrew couldn’t help but watch the way it wetted her lips, making them look full and plump. Stop it, he scolded himself. These gardens had always been his and Louisa’s domain. It almost felt wrong to bring another woman here, even if she was the nanny.

Andrew laughed stiffly. “They’ve had a string of failed relationships, and I think it’s put them off the whole idea. Although, I’ve got to say, if they’re anything like me, they must miss the sex.”

Emma’s eyes widened. “You haven’t dated?”

“No. I’ve thought about it, but… I just haven’t been in the mood to put myself out there.” He stole a glance at her. “Our family doesn’t have the best fertility records and, right now, that’s pretty much all a girl is after. They want to try for babies, and we’re not up to the mark.”

“But you have a child, and you were able to conceive a second one,” she said. She immediately looked down, her cheeks flushing.

“Who told you about that?” His eyes narrowed. Who’s been telling you things about me? As much as he was trying to warm up to Emma, there was a chip on his shoulder that he couldn’t quite shake. He didn’t like people knowing too much about him.

“Jason. I was curious, so I asked some questions. I hope you don’t mind.”

He shrugged. “I suppose you would’ve found out, sooner or later. With Alfie, we were trying to get pregnant all day, every day, stealing every moment we could. It was insane, that level of passion. But, with the other child, it happened without us even meaning for it to. We thought it was a gift, but it turned out to be a curse.”

“You shouldn’t say that.”

“No, I know, but that’s how I feel. I’d have given anything to have Louisa back, and we knew it could be risky, but she was so determined… I miss her. I miss that passion in my life. There’s nothing in the world like it.” He stared at the rose garden wistfully, wishing she was still here. Louisa had been everything to him, and he knew it would be near-impossible to find a woman like that again. And yet, he felt content to sit here with Emma, basking in the sunlight and listening to the sound of the children play. What does that mean? In truth, he had no idea. And it scared him.
