The charm of stencils has strong appeal for commercial applications as well as decorative purposes for the home. This collection of stencils is the result of skilled artisan A. Desaint’s many years’ experience working on a variety of buildings throughout Great Britain and France. The stencils are from early twentieth century tiles, murals, ceilings, borders, and other architectural ornamentation, and range from elegant floral designs to intricate symmetrical patterns. Desaint’s Ideas and Studies in Stendlling and Decorating was originally presented as a source book for stencil ideas and coloring suggestions. For this Dover edition we have eliminated all of the color plates found in the original book, selecting only the black-and-white patterns. You will notice that these patterns have solid white, dotted, lined, and solid black areas. This will assist you in selecting the colors for your stencil designs, as you will be able to visualize the outcome. For example, try to limit all the dotted areas to one or two colors, all of the lined areas to one or two colors, and so on. The thin black lines running through some of the stencils indicate where the image is repeated.
