Visiting the Flower Shop

In our efforts to learn about and reflect on the work of the families of the children in our classroom, we made a walking field trip visit to the place of work for one of the parents in our program. It was a small flower shop. The parent of a child in our classroom greeted us in her apron and showed us around the shop, demonstrating how she used the clippers in her apron pocket to select and trim certain flowers to make the bouquets they would sell to customers. The next week we changed the dramatic play area into a flower shop. We had a variety of aprons with pockets for the tools, which included clippers, pencil and paper to write down the orders, and string to tie the flower stems together. On a table, we also added little cards for the workers or the customers to write tiny notes to go with the flower arrangements. We had tons of plastic flowers and greens, and Styrofoam to poke the flowers into or vases to arrange them in. We added ribbons and other odds and ends we could round up to encourage further creativity in the flower arranging. We talked about when you might want to send someone flowers, and one of my favorite moments was when a child wrote on his tiny greeting card, “I am sorry your dog died. Mine did too.”
