How Do I Select High-Quality Tasks?

When selecting a task, it is important to select rich tasks in which all students can engage in relevant, rigorous, and meaningful mathematics. Not all tasks are equal. A high-quality task piques students’ curiosity while also provoking productive struggle. It is in this struggle that you are pushing their thinking and helping them work through authentic problem solving.

EARLY IN MY CAREER I DIDN’T THINK ABOUT THE QUALITY OF A TASK. I FIGURED IT WAS MY JOB TO MAKE A DULL TASK FUN AND ENJOYABLE. I DIDN’T REALIZE THAT THE TASK SPARKED THE LEARNING.
