* Although Krakauer’s best-selling book Under the Banner of Heaven did not specifically concern FLDS, Krakauer’s extensive research into Mormon fundamentalism included the group, which alarmed him to the point that he adopted a “lost boy” and became an untiring anti-FLDS activist since his book was published in 2004. Krakauer also testified before the Texas committee with mixed results. Giving his disinterested thanks to Krakauer for his appearance, the committee chairman inadvertently called the writer “Mr. Crackhouse.” The members seemed most interested in the testimony of private investigator Sam Brower, who they felt had collected evidence that could be used in court.

* The foundation was to be funded at $50,000 a year through 2011, when it was hoped the epidemic of ejected young men would have ceased. Hoole’s law firm was awarded attorneys’ fees and $10,000 a year to feed and clothe young FLDS men who might come to them. For her brief appearance in the matter, Baltimore attorney Joanne Suder received $100,000.
