After rehearsal, I went home and showered. Helen was holding court with a couple of her lady friends, Sandra included. Having Sandra at the theatre had been a godsend. She dealt with all the travel and housing for the actors, their per diem, and the ticket sales. How did Helen do it all when it was just her running the theatre and directing the productions? My aunt’s work ethic and dedication to her theatre was inspiring. I could never accomplish it all, the way she did. She was an inspiration.

I threw on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt with a rooster on it from my favorite bar in the city. I walked downstairs and gave her a peck on the cheek.

“Tell Oliver I said I miss him and have fun, honey. I’m glad rehearsals are going so well. I can’t wait to see Rent.” She patted me n the cheek. “Go get laid. You’ve been too tense lately.”

I pretended to be shocked, dropping my jaw open in surprise. “Aunt Helen!” I exclaimed, clutching the invisible pearls around my neck.

She cackled and smirked at me.

“I’m too tired, anyway. Besides, Oliver is so not interested in me, so I think that’s off the table.” I shrugged.

“Stranger things have occurred, dear. You and Oliver would be so good for each other. He would ground you, and I’ve always said you needed that. Of course, the man you are now is not the same little boy with his head in the clouds. I miss him.” She sighed and lifted her glass of red wine into the air. “Here’s to growth, which really just means getting older.”

“No shit,” Sandra barked. “The last time I grew as a person, I turned fifty. Worst day of my life.”

“Go one and get out of here. Have fun, honey,” Helen said sweetly, her eyes glowing with the love she had for me. Every day with her was absolutely wonderful. I loved sitting up with her and talking until it was later than we planned. I could get used to this.

“See you tomorrow, Sebastian. If you see Evan tonight, please tell him I want a grandbaby.” She said seriously.

“I will deliver the message if I run into him. However, I think it’s just Crystal and Oliver I’ll be seeing tonight. I think she’s trying to help get him out of that hard-crustacean shell of his,” I answered snidely. It was true. Oliver was a hard nut to crack, and I had been trying. He was a gentle giant, and there were moments when I really hoped we were connecting. Then he would say something acidic or confounding, and I felt like we had taken two steps back instead of a step forward.

I hopped in Helen’s car and drove to Rumors. I had met Danny and Blake here once already, so I knew where it was. I knew where everything in the Pleasant was. It wasn’t hard.

I walked past the doorman, who just nodded at me and saw Oliver and Crystal over by the bar talking to the bartender.
