Toby, age twenty-six, liked shoes. In fact, he always went with his girlfriends to Barneys or Bloomingdale’s to help them pick out their shoes. His choices were always right, and his girlfriends, and then their friends, tended to regard him as some sort of metrosexual hero. Most men, after all, complain about being dragged into stores by women, yet Toby was not only willing and eager, but expert. He knew a good pair of Jimmy Choos when he saw one.
His new girlfriend, Kate, though, understood early on that Toby’s interest in women’s shoes went beyond style concerns and helpfulness. Once in a while, Toby convinced her to dress up in her “highest, dirtiest pair of shoes” and nothing else, and then have sex with him. Kate told him it reminded her of the Sex and the City episode in which the character of Charlotte goes into a shoe store and covets a pair of expensive shoes. The salesman agrees to give her the shoes for free in exchange for letting him rub and touch her feet. The more she lets him rub, the more shoes she gets for free. Toby had laughed along with Kate when she recounted the plot. But something was different about Toby, and he knew it. He could see Kate’s look of wariness, feel her reservations, and as a result, the high-heeled sex with her wasn’t as satisfying as he felt it could be. After a while, he stopped making the request, and that was that: no more shoe fantasies with Kate.
But shoe fantasies on his own? Toby didn’t exactly indulge them. He wasn’t a “pervert,” after all. But, yes, he had thought about shoes. Stilettos, to be precise. Their sharpness. Those heels could be a weapon; they could stop a man in his tracks. But they could also hobble the person who wore them. They could render her as submissive as a Chinese woman with bound feet. In fact, Toby had fantasized about shoes and girls’ feet since he was about thirteen. He and his younger sister would occasionally play a game in which she would put on her mother’s high heels and walk on Toby’s back until he would call out some form of “uncle.” It was a contest of sorts to see who was tougher. Sometimes his sister won, and other times he did.
They’d always had an intense relationship. She was blond and sarcastic and fascinating, and when they were younger they would take naps together, and he remembered the unbelievable pleasure of his sister’s head against his shoulder, her breaths coming softly against his neck, each one making him churn inside with a strange, overstimulated sensation. The household had crackled with excitement: pillow fights, getting undressed together to go swimming, secret trips to the kitchen together in the middle of the night. Their mother knew about the intensity between brother and sister and was amused by it; she herself was blond and powerful, and would let Toby light her cigarettes sometimes, which she smoked in one of those cool-looking holders, like Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle.
