Chapter Fifteen

A Quick Detour, a Proposal and All Hell Breaks Loose

Up before dawn, he knew the eight-hour drive to Riverton would do little to calm Mystic’s nerves. While driving, Caden quietly considered all the angles in the upcoming confrontation and ways to protect her from herself as well as others.

They checked into the Riverton Cozy Inn and unpacked their bags, showered, and sat down to relax while waiting for Tristian’s phone call. It wasn’t long before Mystic restlessly paced the room, took the remote from him, flipped through the channels, then flopped on the bed.

She planned to wait for the moon to rise and then shift into wolf form to snoop around the Rez before contacting Tristian and heading to the casino. Something wasn’t right, she felt it in her gut since before Ethan asked her to accompany him to Colorado. And look how that turned out.

“Mystic, let’s take a walk,” Caden suggested after inadvertently intercepting her thoughts.

“Yes, but I’m not sure it’s safe. What if our arrival was detected and reported? There could be a hired assassin waiting to take me out. I want my life back or at least some part of it. I’m tired of hiding, tired of being afraid, tired of being shot at, and most of all tired of not having control over my own life.”

“Not where I’m going to take you. Close your eyes.” He wrapped his hands around her waist and teleported them out of the room. The sound of waves lapping against the shore and the scream of a bald eagle warning others away from his territory replaced the drone of the television.

“Where are we?” she asked without opening her eyes.

“On the secluded north shore of Leigh Lake. You can open your eyes now,” he whispered, his hand caressing slowly up and down her spine as he held her tightly against his body.

She opened her eyes slowly and sucked in a breath. “Oh, wow, it’s beautiful. We’ll be safe here for a while? Where exactly are we?” Her body melted against his, and she tucked her head under his chin. The fresh scent of Lodge Pole Pine and Blue Spruce wafted on the breeze.

“What does it matter?” He laughed. “We’re inside Teton National Park, southeast of Mount Moran. Paintbrush and Leigh Canyons end here. Thought we’d explore for a while then follow the hiking trail back to String Lake, it’s about a mile or so then find a quiet place and relax. It was apparent the hotel room wasn’t having that effect on you.”

Mystic giggled and stretched her arms out wide while still leaning into him. “You got that right. Do we have to go back?”

“Not if you don’t want to.” He paused for a beat. “But I imagine Tristian will notify everyone that we are missing and launch an all-out search for us shortly after dark if we don’t return. I didn’t tell anyone we were leaving. And I don’t want to deal with Tristian if he’s pissed.”

“Me either, but such irresponsible behavior.
