Chapter Fifteen

Early that afternoon on the way to Helena’s house, Quinton kept fuming about Jessica being arrested and still being able to plan his brother’s funeral. “I called my new lawyer, Brian Haynes, and he said there was nothing that could be done. He suggested I go along with everything at this stage and not make waves. He said I should look at the bigger picture and the bigger picture is making sure Jessica doesn’t get her hands on the company that my brother and I built from the ground up.”

“That makes sense. There’s nothing worse than family disagreements at a funeral.”

“It’s a little more than that, Elsa-May,” Quinton said.

As agreed, Quinton parked his car down the road from Helena’s house. He stayed in the car while the two sisters made their way back to the house on foot. They managed to slip through the fence and then they walked up the driveway.

When they reached the front door, Elsa-May was quite out of breath.

“Are you okay?” Ettie asked.

“I will be in a minute.”

Ettie knocked on the door. A few seconds later, Helena opened the door. This time she was dressed in a black figure-hugging bodysuit. “You’re back.” She eyed both of the sisters and then looked beyond them. “Quinton's not with you, is he?”

“No we walked in… got through the fence.” Elsa-May was still breathless.

“I hope you don't mind. We’d like to help you too. Once the murderer is found, the police will leave both you and Jessica alone.” Ettie said.

“That’s right and they should give us both a formal apology. They grilled me for hours this morning. I’ve not long been home. They say she’ll be up for bail tomorrow. I just hope she gets it.”

“We’re so sorry she’s been arrested.”

“Thank you. Me too. Come inside, Betty, and…”

“It’s Ettie and Elsa-May,” Ettie told her.

“That's right. I hope you haven’t come to ask more questions because I've had a dreadful time. I was just about to lie down. I've got a terrific headache.”

“Sorry to hear that your daughter was arrested,” Elsa-May said, repeating what her sister had just stated. When they got to the garden room, she sat in the same seat as the day before.

“Yes, thank you. They will release her as soon as they find out the truth.”

“And what is the truth?” Elsa-May asked.

“She didn't do it. That poison was planted here. I believe the police knew that and that's why they raided the place. They could’ve put it here themselves. It wouldn’t be the first time they’ve done something like that.”

“Do you think the police are trying to frame your daughter?” Ettie asked.

“It's very possible they did it for money. Whoever killed Richard might’ve paid the police to arrest Jessica. Do you know how much money a police detective retires on? It makes them vulnerable to bribes.”

“No, we don't know,” Ettie said.

“Not very much, I can tell you that. It’s a mere pittance. That's why they're tempted all the time. Tempted to turn. The circumstances are crazy. Why would Jessica murder the man she loves?”

Elsa-May leaned forward.
