SOLDIERS FROM “Das Reich,” the division that had massacred the people of Oradour-sur-Glane on the same afternoon the Forty-fifth Field Hospital had come ashore, reached the Normandy front in a somewhat piecemeal fashion. The first units arrived by mid-June, others not until early July. Six German soldiers from Das Reich deserted as soon as they arrived. On June 29, Adolf Diekmann, the commander who had ordered the massacre, was just north of Noyers, about twenty-five miles from the Forty-fifth’s Second Platoon, when an Allied aerial attack erupted. He left the shelter of his dugout without a helmet and was killed by shrapnel that pierced his head from an exploding bomb. Other German soldiers who’d helped snuff an entire village on June 10, 1944, were already dead, too. But those still left alive were busy killing and wounding American soldiers, some of whom would wind up on stretchers at the Forty-fifth Field Hospital.
