“This,” I say, holding the beer bottle up to my face, “was a very good idea.”
Cal laughs. “The first one was a good idea. The second and third were great ideas. Everything after the fifth one, though, will be a mistake for you tomorrow.”
I shake my head, the room spinning slightly as I do.
After I was handed my pink slip, Cal planned a pity party for me at The Bar Charleston after work. A handful of the paper staff is here, and so is Cal’s girlfriend, Jamie. Soumya and Nat are here too. Somewhere. Neither looked very happy when they came in, but I’m too preoccupied feeling sorry for myself to check in with them right now.
“When you’re sober, I want you to give me a call,” Jamie tells me. “I’ve got some ideas and model business plans that you may be interested in.”
Cal pulls her to his side and kisses her hair. “Maybe give her a day to mope before showing her spreadsheets.”
“I’ll spread your sheets,” she whispers, and Cal’s ears turn red.
“You all are cute,” I say, and Jamie’s face reddens to match Cal’s ears. She excuses herself to go to the bathroom. I focus on Cal. “You’re going to propose to her, right?”
He nods. “She has us on a five year plan that I intend to cock up with an engagement ring.”
“Good for you.” I tip my bottle at him and he smiles.
“You look like you’re having fun.”
I look up to see Kyle staring down at me, a goofy grin on his face.
“How’d you know I was here?” I ask as he sits down next to me in the booth.
“As your blood alcohol level increases, so does your need to Facebook your whereabouts. You really need to be more careful about posting on social media when you’re drinking, you know.” He puts an arm over my shoulders, and I want to shake it off but I resist the urge. “How are you holding up, sport?”
“How does it look like she’s holding up?” Cal asks, annoyance in his voice. Jamie slides back into the booth next to Cal and lays a hand on his forearm.
Kyle furrows his bushy eyebrows together. They look like one long wooly willy worm. I try not to laugh.
“She just lost her job, dude. Let her mourn and be reckless before you try to fix her.”
“Who is this guy?” Kyle asks me, jerking a thumb to Cal.
“We share an office. Well, shared an office. His name is Cal, and he’s like an older brother to me. So don’t get your bones all in a twist. You know, because you’re a chiropractor.”
I’m the only laughing at my joke, but I see Jamie sucking on her bottom lip. I’m pretty sure she wants to at least smile, but has too much class.
Or maybe she's embarrassed by the level of drunk I’m reaching and is keeping herself from calling me out on it. She’s nice, but she has a face about her that looks like she calls other people out on their shit.
