CHAPTER 8

A Flirting Failure

At our pep rally committee meeting on Monday, Mia and I filled the Cupcake Club in on what had happened at the mall. I apologized profusely to Emma for putting her and/or Matt in an awkward position, but she waved it off.

“Anyway, he’d probably think it was funny, girls fighting over him at Icon. Hard to imagine old Stink Foot generating that kind of adoration,” she said with a laugh.

“So did, uh . . . did Callie call him?” I ventured.

“Nope. Not as far as I know. I can scroll through caller ID when I get home and find out for sure.”

“Thanks,” I gushed. I was relieved, but not totally relieved. I wouldn’t be until I knew for sure. Now I had to think about whether I was going to ask him myself. And if so, how and when?

Just then Chris Howard walked by with his friends, and he and Mia waved and smiled at each other.

“I’m so jealous of your love life,” said Emma sadly.

“Don’t be. It’s not love. It’s just a little bit of like,” said Mia, all cool.

“On your part,” said Katie knowledgeably.

“Well, whatever.”

“At least you have someone to march with. Alexis and I are going to be stuck marching together,” said Emma.

“Well . . .” I actually wasn’t planning on marching with Emma if I couldn’t find anyone. I had promised myself that if it came to that, I just wouldn’t go. Better to be thought a fool than to show up and prove it. That’s another one of my mottoes.

“Wait, you are going to march with me, right? I mean, if these girls have dates, who else would I go with?” she asked, gesturing at Katie and Mia.

I decided to turn it into a joke. “It depends on your costume,” I said.

“I’m being a hippie,” said Emma.

I tapped my chin and acted like I was evaluating her idea. She swatted me and said, “Shut up! You know we’re marching together, so just stop!”

Not if I can help it, I thought, but I didn’t say it aloud. Cool Commandment Four rolled through my mind: Do not be too accessible . . . say you have plans, even if you do not.

It was time to change the subject.

“Hey, so, um, getting back to my favorite topic . . .”

“Matt or the Cupcake Club?” said Mia wryly, and the others laughed.

I tossed my head and then sat up straight. “The club, of course. Jeez. Anyway, I know it’s not my project or anything, but it’s going to be pretty hot at the swim meet, you know? So I was wondering, is butter cream the best option?”

The others looked at me blankly.

“Because, you know, it will probably melt and then slide off,” I added.

“Oh,” said Mia. “Well. I already agreed on the recipe and the price with them.”

“What price?” I asked. I couldn’t help myself. She should have checked with me before she agreed to anything.

“One dollar a unit?” Mia didn’t sound confident.

“One dollar a unit?
