Onesimus began preparing some of the food, putting it on trays that could be passed around to the various guests. The process was a familiar one, since he had done much the same for the gatherings in Philemon and Apphia’s home. But the atmosphere surrounding today’s preparations was different. Although Kyrilla was in charge, Onesimus was not one of several slaves preparing the meal. He was actively working with Kyrilla and Demas to make ready for the evening gathering. Moreover, this was the first time Onesimus had prepared such a meal that he would be eating. In Philemon’s household slaves were present to serve the members of the church but not to participate in the meeting. This time would be different, however. Onesimus would be present and participating with the group. While he wasn’t interested in the god they were worshiping, he was intrigued to be a part of something that he had previously been excluded from.

The manner in which Onesimus’s inclusion came about was also new. He was not invited to join. Indeed, no formal invitation had been extended to him. Rather, it was an assumption on the part of the couple that he would attend as a guest of the household. Although they knew he was a slave, they treated him in many ways as an equal. As he lived and worked among the believers coming and going each day, he began to see tangible examples of the type of behavior he had heard talked about by the Stoics in Hierapolis. He thought about this as he continued preparing alongside Demas and Kyrilla.
