Chapter Eleven

Mandy’s phone chimed a classic rock tune the next morning.

She stumbled into the kitchen and tripped over a heap on her way there. It lifted its head and yelped. Not sure which came first. “Sorry, Mooch.” She turned on the lamp and flipped open her cell, charging on the counter.

Amelia’s name on the ID put her instantly awake. “Hey!”

“Hi, it’s me again.”

“Hi, me.”

“Hope I’m not bugging you.”

“Never.”

“You sound groggy. Did I wake you?”

“Uh, maybe a little. But that’s okay. I needed to get up. I have a doctor’s appointment today. One month since surgery.”

“Need a ride?”

“Sure, if you can swing it.” Mandy was pretty sure Nolan had meetings on Tuesday mornings. And her lack of sleep had caused her to forget to secure a ride.

“Absolutely. Also wondered if you want to go have coffee with me again this morning?”

“I’ll never say no to great coffee, or great company.”

“Yay! See you at nine.” Even through the phone line, Mandy felt a warmth from Amelia North that reached out and beckoned for a long and lasting friendship. A best-friend kind of friendship. Mandy knew the importance of having close female friends and a support system.

Mandy hated being alone, period, much less in a new town with no friends. At some point it had become very important to befriend Amelia. That they were becoming fast friends in such a short amount of time had to be a God thing, right?

A God thing.

How long had it been since that phrase had entered the vocabulary of her heart?

Maybe reading the Bible Nolan left here was helping. Not that she’d readily admit that to him quite yet.

Speaking of the Bible, if he left his copy here with her, what was he reading? She determined to drill him about that one.

Hope surged in Mandy that concern for people’s faith in God would once again come to life in her heart. All it would take was one breath of God to bring her faith alive again. No matter how far gone or how long.

So much of her younger years had been spent praying over others. Laboring in prayer for her friends’ or family members’ lost or failing faith.

Never in those days would she have dreamed she’d be the one in need of those prayers.

But who would pray for her like she’d prayed for others?

Nolan.

She clutched his Bible to her chest, though it was a tangible echo of the faith that she had prayed he’d one day embrace, she hadn’t been able to read it again until now. Something fluttered from beneath it. Her take-home instruction sheet from the hospital, and…something in Nolan’s handwriting. Funny how she remembered it all these years.

Slowly, she read it. Then again, and his words both moved and sobered her. She bent forward and broke, sobbing. Shooed Mooch away as he incessantly licked tears from her face.

Then she started laughing as she rubbed the dog’s head. “You probably don’t have sympathy as much as you have a penchant for salt, huh boy?”

No matter. The best was true.
