CHAPTER SIX
HEâD PUT HIMSELF in this position, Eduardo reminded himself for about the fortieth time as he heard Lila cry out in her sleep, and saw Tess roll over and wrap her arms around the little girl, drawing her into the warmth of her body.
Family!
That was what heâd sought.
What heâd expected of his life.
At first Ilse had protested they needed time together before they had a child, then later sheâd refused because his work had been too important to himâtoo all-consumingâand sheâd be left to raise the child or children on her own.
Now he sometimes wondered if thereâd been other affairs.
If sheâd put off motherhood so she could pursue her own interests.
And he, too, was to blame, for his work had taken him away from home for long hours, sometimes days on end, but when a breakthrough was possibleâwhen success was hovering in the air above a Petri dishâhow could he leave?
He tried to shake away the thoughts but they wouldnât be ignored. Theyâd been so close to a result in their research.
âAaargh!â
His attention snapped to the young man on the bed, and he reached out to hold the slender shoulder before his patient could try to rise.
âItâs all right,â he said, as the young man, weak though he was, battled to sit up.
âLila!â
The panic in his cry woke Tess, who sat up in bed and looked across at Eduardo. She sized up the situation in an instant and snapped on the bedside light, pulling back the sheet so the young man could see his sister.
He collapsed back onto his pillow and closed his eyes, and although Eduardo spoke to him, trying for a response of some kind, his eyes remained shut.
âMaybe heâs sleeping naturally now,â Tess said, coming to stand on the other side of the bed and study their patient.
âLetâs hope he is,â Eduardo answered her, grasping the young manâs wrist and feeling the steady beat of his pulse. His breathing also seemed stronger, so maybe, just maybe, the crisis had passed.
âDo you think remembering his sisterâs name means thereâs no brain damage?â Tess asked, and Eduardo looked up at her, seeing for the first time how little her white cotton nightdress did to hide her figure, now backlit by the light behind her.
What had she asked?
He did a mental headshake and remembered.
âIt could be a positive sign, but it could also be some survival mechanismâsome instinct that prompted him to make sure his sister was safe before he plunged back into darkness.â
âPoor young man,â Tess said, then she raised her head and looked at Eduardo. âYou found out Lilaâs name, did no one tell you his? If we knew it we could use it when we talked to him.â
Eduardo gave a small shrug.
âI doubt the names weâve been given for any of the adults are their real names. I think people who have been through what they must have suffered are ultra-protective of their real identities.â
Tess reached out and brushed the young manâs arm, feeling the less hot skinâsure he was sleeping naturally now.
