Finding third-party certifications on your meat labels can be a helpful way to confirm you know what you’re getting.14 These aren’t ironclad, but they do add an extra layer of protection against false claims. The following information is outlined by the EWG.

American Grassfed Association

Applicable to: beef, bison, lamb, goat, sheep, milk

In order to earn this certification, animals must be raised primarily on pasture with daily access to fresh air. They can only be fed grass and forage and are prohibited from grain feeding and GMO-based feed. The animals can’t be given antibiotics (sick animals have to be treated, but they no longer qualify for certification). This certification does not involve any audits to ensure humane slaughter, nor does it have standards to minimize painful physical treatment (like tail docking or castration).
