Chapter Six

By the time Daystrum made the drive back to the vampire’s manor house near Santa Fe, it was pushing eleven o’clock. He parked his car in the garage and rubbed a hand over his eyes, fatigue and need mixing in his system. Feeling a tension headache coming on, he pushed out of the car and headed into the house. Daystrum hoped a shower, complete with jack-off session, and his bed would ease him.

As soon as he walked into the house, Daystrum realized that wasn’t going to happen. Not right away, at least. He had just made it to the back stairwell when Benjamin Raysis approached him. The young vampire—at thirty-one years old, practically considered a child by most vampires—waved and called his name, jogging to catch up with him.

Daystrum bit back a sigh and turned to face the man. He offered a tired smile and said, “Hey, Benji. What can I do for you?”

“Hi, Day,” Benji greeted, grinning widely.

In Daystrum’s opinion, the guy had way too much energy for it being after eleven o’clock at night.

Benji stopped in front of him, bouncing on his toes with excess energy. “I’m so glad I found you. Master Adalric is looking for you. He thought you were out because your car was gone, but I heard you come home, so I told him I’d find you,” he rambled.

Daystrum held up his hand, hoping to stem the man’s verbal diarrhea. It worked. “Is the master in his office? Or has he retired for the evening?”

“He’s still in his office. He has a few others with him.”

Nodding, Daystrum settled his hand on Benji’s shoulder and squeezed. “Thanks.” At Benjamin’s enthusiastic nod, Daystrum scoffed. “And lay off the caffeine.”

“Can’t. I have night watch,” Benji replied, grinning broadly.

That was news to Daystrum. Had he approved that? He’d have to check his records. Not wanting to disappoint the man, he nodded. “Okay, then take the time to do a perimeter check to burn off some of your jitters. Get moving.”

Benji nodded quickly, then took off. Quick as that, he was out of sight.

Daystrum chuckled and shook his head. Young enthusiasm. It’d been decades since he’d felt that way. Thinking of Korbin, he changed his mind. His enthusiasm just had a new direction, that was all, and he looked forward to exploring it.

Smiling to himself, Daystrum headed upstairs and to Master Adalric’s office. Fortunately, his own room was in the west wing. It allowed him to remain close to his leader, along with two of the coven’s enforcers and the lead tracker, as they all resided in the west wing. Nearly a dozen single vampires occupied the second and third floors of the east wing. The human donors enjoyed the comforts of the south wing, and guests were housed on the first floor of the east wing.

The few bonded vampires built small homes deeper on the grounds. Once their children came of age, they decided between themselves if the vampire were to remain with their parents or settle in the manor with the others.
