As Maggie awoke the following morning, it took a few moments for her to figure out what that whimper was. It sounded like a puppy. âOh, thatâs right, Maggieâ she said to herself. âYou found that stray puppy last night.â As she looked down toward the sound, the puppy was looking up at her and started whimpering even louder.
My, oh my, youâre impatient,â she mumbled as she petted the puppy. âOkay, okay, Iâll let you out to take care of your business.â As she approached the door, the puppy got even more excited wagging his tail repeatedly. âGo on out and bark when you want to come back inâ she crooned as she picked him up and kissed him on his tiny nose.
Watching the puppy out the window Maggie realized she would have to feed the puppy some breakfast before they went to town. âOh dear, what can I feed Crackers this morning? Heâll be hungry again.â As Maggie rummaged through her cabinets she found some quick oats that she was quite sure the puppy could eat if she crushed them and put them in warm milk.
A tiny but persistent bark brought her attention back to the puppy. As she opened the door to let him in, she asked, âDo you feel better now?â As Maggie picked up Crackers, he licked her face as if to say, âGood Morning, Iâm hungry.â
âYouâre hungry again, I bet, Maggie fussed over the puppy. You will have to wait until I can get this cereal ready for your breakfast. Hopefully you will like it because I donât have anything else until we go to town,â Maggie muttered as she crushed the cereal and added it to warm milk. As she put his breakfast on the floor for him she said, âI hope youâll like this.â Crackers looked up at Maggie and gave out a small bark again. He then began to eat all of the crushed oats and warm milk.
Several hours later, Maggie drove the distance to her closest town of Springfield with Crackers snuggled next to her on the seat. âWell, Maggie,â she asked herself, âWhat are you going to do with this little puppy if you canât find its owner? This little squirt would sure entertain you on these cold winter days. Now donât get ahead of yourself, Maggie. This puppyâs owner may be sick with worry and have notices all over town looking for this little bundle. Just think of him as a temporary visitor until his owner is found. Then, you can make any final decisions if his owner is not found.â
Maggieâs errands took her into the hardware store, the feed store for some puppy food, the gas station and the post office and the grocery store. She left a sign at each of these places of business and finally decided that maybe the barber shop may be a good place to leave the last notice. All of the merchants and different customers made over the small black puppy, but no one claimed that it was theirs.
