He had been cooped up in the house with his twins for over twenty-four sleepless hours. Not that Ethan was complaining. But with fevers, they were ornery. After a call to the pediatrician last night, Ethan was convinced they both had a cold, since their fevers weren’t too high. If the doctor wasn’t worried, Ethan tried not to be.

He scanned the window overlooking his front yard. No Laney yet.

He missed their opportunity to chat while the girls played on the playground after church today. He had been enjoying their time together this past week. Each conversation they had seemed to draw them closer together. And he liked it.

With his free hand, he scraped his hair back as he continued to sway Tori from side to side in his arms. Why had he mentioned that Zoe had asked about her? He knew why. Because he wanted to see Laney.

His chest drummed in anticipation of her arrival. With all the time they’d been spending together, his feelings for Laney seemed to grow exponentially each day. A floorboard squeaked under his feet. He held his breath until he was sure the noise hadn’t woken Tori.

He pressed his lips to Tori’s forehead, and it seemed slightly cooler. Maybe. He shifted his sleepy toddler in his arms and continued rocking her.

When Laney finally rolled into his driveway, his heart knocked around like a herd of galloping horses. He shook his head. Lately, his emotions were up and down like a teenager’s.

She opened the door and peeked in. “Can I come in?” she mouthed.

He nodded, trying to calm his heart rate. “I finally got Zoe asleep and put her in bed. So far, so good,” he whispered.

Laney stopped, her blue dress flowing back and forth with every movement. “Oh, well, I don’t want to wake her. Just tell her I dropped by.” She turned.

“Wait,” he said. Tori shifted at his urgent voice. “Please stay,” he said softly.

Her tense shoulders seemed to relax as she closed the door, kicked her ivory heels off and walked over to him in bare feet. She gazed at Tori with love and worry, then leaned down and brushed her lips across his daughter’s forehead.

Laney’s wildflower perfume tickled his nose. The scent had once scared him—made him fear he’d care for someone and life would blow up again. Now he welcomed the smell. The feelings gave him hope. Maybe he was ready to move forward. Take a leap of faith.

“She feels pretty warm. I’m guessing she still has a fever,” Laney whispered.

The compassionate words awoke something deep inside him. She cared deeply for his girls, and somehow, that bonded them.

If he wasn’t careful, he might fall in love with Laney.

And he wasn’t sure he wanted that to happen just yet.

“I take it Zoe calmed down Friday?” She gestured at the unicorn stuffed animal in the corner.

“Yes, she did. Her uncontrollable crying had nothing to do with you or the unicorn and everything to do with her exhaustion and that she was coming down with something.
