Balancing Family and Work

Now that you have an idea of how to work on yourself and your relationship, it is time to talk about how this translates into the two of you taking on the world of work—a world that is still unfriendly to families, a world that must evolve.

You will have significant choices to make about what you want from your marriage, your family, and your work. A huge issue is how to manage household tasks and childcare in the context of your work situations. Fortunately, couples who have successfully managed this difficult task have good ideas they can share with you.

In this chapter, I suggest you review what kind of marriage you want to have. Richard Reeves has some ideas about this. I will also talk about the “fair” division of household responsibilities and how resistance to sharing responsibility can play out in your relationship, and then end with a review of an important research project that asked couples who were successfully balancing family and work how they did it.
